Meet Nick Murphy

    Collaboratory Researcher Profiles

Project Title: Empowering regions for better homes. Devolved governance for warm, healthy and energy-efficient housing.

What were you doing before starting this PhD?

Before starting my PhD I was semi-retired following an extensive career in social housing, developing, managing and improving affordable homes for people.  My involvement in the sector continues in a non-executive capacity, sitting on the Board of local Housing Associations.

What motivated you to apply for this specific PhD project?

I have a firm belief in the importance of a decent home as the bedrock for a decent quality of life.  The research topic makes best use of my past experiences.  I have commissioned large scale retrofit projects, and have policy and governance experience at national and local levels.  Alongside this, my motivation is personal development; I really want to challenge and stretch myself.

What difference do you hope to make in Nottingham through this research?

Through this research, EMCCA will have evidence backed analysis on how best to scale their stated ambition to retrofit more homes in the region.  By better co-ordinating and directing the efforts of local authorities and partners throughout the supply chain EMCCA can ensure more local residents will benefit by living in a comfortable home free from fuel poverty.  Cumulatively there will be a reduction in carbon use and progress towards net zero targets.

What do you hope to be doing in 5 years’ time?

Promoting the findings of my PhD research!
